An archetype is a universal and recurring pattern, symbol, or character type that is found throughout human experience in myths, literature, dreams, and art. Derived from Greek words meaning "original pattern," archetypes represent fundamental human motivations and are an inherited part of the human psyche.
Psychiatrist Carl Jung believed that archetypes reside in the "collective unconscious," a shared, primordial memory of all humanity. They are innate, unconscious thought patterns that emerge through our experiences and are often expressed symbolically. For example, some archetypes are: The Self, Shadow, and Persona.
In story, an archetype is a template for a character, plot, or symbol that has appeared throughout centuries of storytelling across different cultures. Literary archetypes give stories structure and allow for deeper thematic and psychological meaning. Other archetypes may include the Seeker, the Warrior, the Caregiver, the Trickster.
Mythologist Joseph Campbell expanded on Jung's work by identifying the "Hero's Journey," a universal narrative pattern found in myths worldwide, from ancient folklore to modern blockbusters like Star Wars. This journey, which involves a hero leaving his or her ordinary world to face a challenge and return transformed, is a well-known example of a story archetype. Campbell said that “there is really only one hero, and he/she wears many faces, including our own.”
From a spiritual perspective, archetypes, symbols, and heroes act as a universal language that guides humanity toward deeper truths and self-realization. Carl Jung and Campbell saw these elements as bridges between the physical world and the sacred, helping us access the wisdom of the "collective unconscious".
Archetypes give structure to our spiritual journeys. They are not labels but living, guiding forces that shape our consciousness and connect us to a larger, divine reality. While archetypes are the deep-seated patterns, symbols are the tangible forms—the images, stories, and rituals—through which those patterns manifest in our conscious world. Symbols are the vocabulary of the unconscious. Think of symbols that are meaningful for you; engaging with them is essential for spiritual transformation.
Together, archetypes, symbols, and heroes provide a spiritual map. By recognizing the patterns (archetypes) that animate our life, interpreting the language of the soul (symbols), and consciously stepping into our own heroic journey, we can find our authentic spiritual path. This process allows us to move beyond our worldly personality or "mask" and align with the divine, authentic self we are meant to be.
