Sunday Service - The Magic of Story, Week 1: The Need for Myth

This Sunday, we begin a 5-week series called The Magic of Story. The first lesson this week is The Need for Myth, in which we will emphasize the importance of story or myth to influence us personally and collectively. Join us for an exciting series!

Mythology is both a personal and universal lens through which we view the world. Though “myths” have often been seen as false, they are in fact the essence of our belief systems. Unity teaches that as we change our beliefs, we also change our world. Because of this truth, it is essential that we become aware of our mythologies.

From the time we are born, our parents and/or early caregivers initiate us into the stories of our families and our society. We are taught expected behaviors along with oral history. We learn by osmosis through the patterns, symbols, and events that we experience. As we mature, our mythology expands to include larger stories of culture, religion, and humanity.

Our personal and collective thoughts, feelings, and beliefs arise from deeper archetypes in the human psyche. These ancient patterns are the crucible from which myth is born and expressed. Thus, universal mythic themes, such as death and resurrection, for example, have their origin in the collective psyche and can be found reflected in cultural stories worldwide. We are unconsciously driven by the myths that “live us,” until we can discover these stories and beliefs and awaken to their impact on our lives.

How do we access these guiding mythic themes? Why do we need myth or sacred story? Can we discover our personal myth? Is there a way to create new mythology in our lives? Does it have the magical power to transform the world?

These questions and others will be addressed over the next 5 weeks (from October 5 through November 5) as we delve into The Magic of Story. During this Sunday Series, we will discover the connections between myth and belief and explore sacred stories as they pertain to the many dimensions of our lives. We will then discuss the lesson further on each following Wednesday (see below for registration info for the Wednesday classes).

Myth is a powerful healing tool because through it, we realize that we are not alone in the world and that our challenges, while uniquely personal, are also universal and as old as time. Becoming aware of the larger story can awaken us to our Cosmic Self. I invite you to say “Yes!” to this exciting adventure.

Join us on the Wednesday following each Sunday during this 5-week Sunday Series, when we will meet on Zoom to deepen our dive into the lesson from that week.
