Sunday Service - Finding Joy - Advent Week 4

Christmas has nearly returned, and I am aware of wanting to convey the birth of the Christ as an ongoing event with cosmic implications. This birth that occurs personally and collectively feels more poignant than usual because of the world crisis, and for many, it is because differing political and religious beliefs are at the center of it. The irony is that all of the world religions teach essentially the same ideas at their core: love, peace, unity, harmony...and the list goes on.

Theologian Matthew Fox said, “Humanity has the power and responsibility to increase the glory that is the divine presence in the cosmos.” This is true whether we are Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, New Thought, or any other faith. But we can ask, “Are we increasing the divine presence in the cosmos when we fight wars in the name of politics or religion; refuse to acknowledge those who are suffering; remain complacent about injustice; continue to destroy our environment; act fanatically about our religious path being the one “right” way or our political view being the only “right” one? The answer, of course, is no.

We can take responsibility for increasing the divine in the cosmos in three important ways: 1) By our praise and gratitude and reverence for the blessings of creation, 2) By our willingness to give birth to the Christ (The Divine Consciousness), and 3) By aligning ourselves with committed spiritual community.

The experience of awe and wonder for the beauty of creation invokes greater reverence for the earth and all living beings. Let us pause and appreciate our many blessings. The inner state of gratitude creates a deeper longing for God and for the birth of Christ Consciousness.

Birth includes joy and wonder and ecstasy, as well as labor, pain, and suffering. It ultimately reveals the beauty of a new creation and results in complete transformation. It is no easy task to give birth, but the rewards are certainly worth it! Birthing our true Self requires turning our life and will over to God in a complete surrender. When we do, it is amazing how much assistance is provided by the Universe. Let us become willing to give birth to Christ Consciousness.

One person can help the whole, and when we join together in committed community with a united intention, we can make a profound difference, even despite crisis all around us. Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Let us continue to join together in spiritual community for the greater good.

The Cosmic Christ is crying out to us…longing to be born, longing to express divinity in all forms of life. Fox said, “We are called, like the Cosmic Christ, to radiate the divine presence to/with/from one another. And we, with our unveiled faces reflecting like mirrors the glory of God, all grow brighter and brighter as we are turned into the image that we reflect.” As we radiate the divine presence, we give birth to greater joy!

May you have a Sacred Holiday!
